The 2025 International Forum on Blue Carbon and Sustainable Development (BCSD 2025), jointly organized by the Ocean University of China (OUC), the University of Portsmouth, and the UNESCO Chair in Marine Governance, took place in the coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong, from May 11 to 12.
The event attracted around 120 participants, including experts, scholars, and student representatives from 11 countries such as China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, along with renowned scholars and students from domestic institutions.
Facing the severe challenges posed by climate change, the ocean, as the Earth's largest active carbon reservoir, plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change and achieving carbon neutrality goals through its blue carbon resources. The forum focused on blue carbon and global and regional sustainable development, covering three main themes: blue carbon and climate change, blue governance and healthy oceans in the context of carbon neutrality, and marine sustainable development and blue carbon finance.
Over two days, 24 experts and scholars from prestigious institutions such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, University of Portsmouth, Tsinghua University, Sun Yat-sen University, Beijing Normal University, and OUC delivered insightful presentations on these topics. Together, they explored solutions for ocean involvement in addressing climate change and advancing global sustainable development.
As a leading institution in marine higher education in China, OUC in Qingdao emphasizes collaboration with global partners to address climate change and promote sustainable development in the global era.
In 2022, the university established the Center for Ocean Carbon Neutrality, using interdisciplinary strengths to conduct organized research and deepen international cooperation.
This international forum is expected to actively promote international exchanges and cooperation in blue carbon, contributing to the establishment of a shared human ocean destiny community.
